Good Cheap Car Insurance

All auto insurance companies offer "discounts' for various factors relating to your car insurance policy. These auto insurance "discounts" are available to everyone (as long as they qualify for the discount) but are not routinely offered by the car insurance company when you organise your insurance.

It is estimated that the insurance industry pockets hundreds of millions of dollars a year of premiums that need not be paid if the insurer, ie the car owner, asked for them.

When you get a quote for your auto insurance you should always investigate discount. Don't expect the auto insurance company to offer them to you, you have to know about them and ask.

Although they can vary from place to place and company to company, there are some general categories of discount that you should always investigate. Here are some of them.

Multi Policy discount. Many insurance companies offer you an incentive to take out more than one type of insurance with them. This incentive is in the form of a discount on the premiums for the policies. When you are investigating auto insurance find out whether the insurance company offers a multi policy discount and find out how it works. Will you , for example, get a discount for combining your auto insurance and home insurance policy with them? Find out. If you have a range of insurance policies it can be well worth your while finding out how many you can have with the one company rather than spreading them around.

Driver training. A discount is often offered for drivers who have had extra driver training beyond the usual. This can often be true for younger drivers who are high risk drivers anyway. Extra driver training is always useful, and you may find that the cost is offset after a period of time by lower premiums.

Anti theft devices. Auto insurance companies don't like cars at high risk of theft. If you have an anti theft device fitted to your car it can often qualify you for a discount, and like driver training may well pay for itself over time.

Multi vehicle discounts. Many families now insure 2 cars, or 3 or 4. Find out whether you can get a discount for having them all insured with the one company. Remember to ask for it, it won't always be offered.

Renewal or no claims discount. Most auto insurance companies offer a discount for the length of time you have insured the vehicle without making a claim. As the length of time increases the discount increases, up to a point. If you have a good insurance record already make sure that the company knows this before getting a quote. It can be quite a significant amount.

Location discount. Some companies will offer you a discount according to where the vehicle lives, or it's location. In my case I live in a small regional town and get a discount because I am not often going to be driving my vehicle in busy and risky city traffic.

Low milage discount. Some companies can offer a discount for cars which are only driven small distances each year, on the principle that a vehicle which is usually off the road is less likely to be involved in an accident.

Retiree discount. There are auto insurance companies which offer discounts for older drivers with a good record. In fact there are auto insurance companies which only insure older drivers. But along side this it is also getting more difficult to insure cars where the drivers are getting into their 80s and 90s.

So when getting an auto insurance quote make sure you thoroughly investigate the discounts. They will vary from company to company, and place to place, but always remember to ask.
